Ever since I was introduced to Van Gogh's shoe paintings, I've been fascinated with the idea of investing large amounts of time to immortalizing mundane objects. These are shoes. Yes. But is that all they are? Who's shoes are they? Where have they been? What does the person who wears them do? Are they now more valuable because they have been made into art? Or were they made into art because they were valuable to begin with? Peeling back another layer: What is value and who determines worth?
